SENEGAL
Screening and early treatment of sickle cell disease
ACTIONS
• Implementation of neonatal screening in the maternity ward of the Saint-Louis teaching hospital
• Begin activity in the maternity ward at the Ngom referral healthcare centre in Saint-Louis
• Samples are analysed in
the CERPAD laboratory and children diagnosed with sickle cell disease are treated in the CERPAD outpatient care unit
ACHIEVEMENTS IN 2020
• 3,997 screenings carried out on 4,414 live births (80.2%)
• 50 children with sickle cell disease diagnosed and treated at CERPAD

Study of the impact of the sickle cell trait on malaria transmission – IMPAS
CAMEROON
STUDY PHASES
• Recruit 5,000 healthy individuals with sickle cell trait
• Compare reinfection dynamics between groups
• In mosquitoes, compare malaria transmission by analysing the blood of subjects of the two groups
ANTICIPATED RESULTS
• Based on the study
results, institute adequate educational and prevention measures for people having the trait.
The results of this study will also help raise awareness in the “malaria ecosystem” about sickle cell disease.
