FOR PEOPLE WITH
ALBINISM
Prevention and early-stage treatment of skin cancers.
SENEGAL
Support for, and development of, the dermatopathology laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar.
GOALS
• Capacity building for the staff of the dermatopatholo-
gy team working
in the pathology department of Henri Mondor Hospital (the department led by Nicolas Ortonne)
• Upgrading of laboratory technical facilities
• Supporting service delivery by introdu- cing quality control of hospital slides
at Henri Mondor Hospital
• Providing dermato- pathology training for students and der- matologists from the sub-Saharan region
ANTICIPATED OUTCOMES
• 4 months of training for
the 2 technicians in the team
• Provision of training for an assistant dermatologist in the dermatopathology department of Henri Mondor Hospital
(the Health Research Training Unit (UFR) of the University Paris Est Créteil)
• Donation of state-of-the-art dermatopathology equipment
• Quality control of 10 samples per month
• Donation of educational resources
• 9 scholarships providing
6 months of training
for 9 students from the sub-region of West Africa

49 precancerous cases, 451 cryotherapy treat- ments, 16 biopsies and
6 explant biopsies, 3 com- plex surgical interventions and 3 referrals
• Cohort of 535 patients
• 2,586 jars of sunscreen dis- tributed in Mali, Mauritania and Niger, 112

• Introduction of mobile clinics hosting consultations to diagnose and treat skin diseases in people with albinism
• Training of dermatologists, doctors and health workers in screening, management and surgical techniques
• Providing awareness and education sessions on the dangers of sun exposure
• Distributing free sunscreen and hats
ACHIEVEMENTS IN 2020
• 367 patients seen in consultation across 2 mobile clinic campaigns - 62.7% retention rate of patients in the active file (2019-2020)
• 215 precancerous lesions treated by cryotherapy and 61 explant biopsies
• 608 jars of sunscreen distributed
• 4 awareness campaigns run
• Documentation of disease epidemiology
• 1 doctoral thesis in medicine and 3 scientific publications based on the results of the 2019 campaign
