 DERMATOLOGY
CONTEXT
and challenges
In sub-Saharan Africa, where there is a high prevalence of skin diseases and
a shortage of dermatologists, Fondation Pierre Fabre has developed the two- pronged approach of providing access to diagnosis and an initial level of care in peripheral care centres alongside the rollout of remote expert diagnosis when a specialist opinion is required. Initially introduced in Mali in 2015, the model has since been transferred to Mauritania, Togo and - soon - Niger. The Foundation also supports programmes for people with albinism,
a genetic disease that can affect as many as 1 person in 1,000 in some parts of Africa (compared with 1 in 20,000 in North America and Europe, according to WHO statistics).
